Short Bed Fuel Tank Toolbox Combos

Short bed pickup trucks have less available bed space to fit a standard sized fuel tank toolbox combo.  This means that the majority of tank toolbox combos on the market will not fit short bed pickup trucks.

This article is designed to highlight the best fuel tank toolbox combos for short bed pickup trucks.  

Keep in mind, you still need to double check the measurements inside your truck to make sure the tank will fit.  The tanks listed below are intended to give you a good starting point for your search. 

Short bed dimensions

Individual make and models will vary, but the following measurements provide a general range of dimensions for most short bed pickup trucks: 

• Short Bed Width (tank length): 55 to 65 inches.
• Distance from cab to wheel well: 12 to 15 inches.
• Wheel well width: 49 to 54 inches. 

Tank Designs for Short Beds

Based on the short bed measurements, you need to find a tank toolbox combo with either narrow width (less than the 12 to 15 inch distance from your cab to the wheel well) or a tank length that will fit between your wheel well width. 

Tank Height

Many short bed fuel tank toolbox combos compensate for reduced bed space by increasing the tank height above the bed rails.  This increased height will make it difficult to use a tonneau cover.  So if you plan to use a tonneau cover with your tank, pay close attention to the tank height which typically can’t exceed 20 inches. 

Under Tonneau Tank Toolbox Combo

Fuelbox offers a 40 gallon capacity tank toolbox combo with a unique design that includes a bottom tank width of just 14 inches.  The lower tank width prevents the lower portion of the tank from hitting the wheel well.

The two longer center beams that stabilize the tank are designed to fit in between the wheel wells.  The overall height of the tank is just 17.5 inches, so you can fit this tank underneath most standard tonneau covers. 

Keep in mind you need a diesel truck to use the Fuelbox auto fuel controller to transfer fuel directly to your factory fuel tank.  If you don’t have a diesel truck, you can still use this tank with a transfer pump instead of the auto fuel controller.

*Note: If you have a Dodge Ram with the puck system, you can still use this tank with a gooseneck trailer. However, this tank is not compatible if you plan to use the 5th wheel.

Fuel Tank Toolbox Combo for Short Bed Truck

ATTA offers an auxiliary tank toolbox combo specifically designed for short bed trucks. This tank offers 34 gallons of total fuel capacity and offers the ability to fit under most standard tonneau covers. 

The 14 inch width makes this tank a great candidate to comfortably sit in front of most short bed wheel wells. The 19 inch height also makes this tank a great option for people with a tonneau cover.

This tank requires the ATTA auxiliary fuel system to transfer fuel from the tank to the truck’s factory fuel tank.

Tool box Fuel Tank Combo for Short Bed

ATI offers a few tank toolbox options for short bed trucks. If you have a diesel truck and want to transfer fuel to your truck fuel tank, choose the auxiliary tank toolbox option with the Fuel Shotz fuel transfer kit.

If you don’t have a diesel truck or just need to use the tank as a transfer tank with a fuel pump, choose the transfer tank toolbox options. 

ATI’s short bed tank toolbox combo’s have lengths of just 48.5 inches which are designed to fit between the wheel wells of most short bed trucks.

If you have a tonneau cover, you need to select the lower capacity options with less height. If you don’t have a tonneau cover, you can select the higher gallon capacity size with the larger height.

L Shaped Transfer Tank Toolbox Combos for Short Beds

ATI’s L Shaped Transfer tank toolbox combos are designed to offer larger space for your tools by taking advantage of the space saving design of an L shaped transfer tank.

These options are designed with longer widths that will fit between most short bed wheel wells due to the reduced tank length.  Most of these tanks will not fit underneath a tonneau cover because of the tank height and the additional 2.5 inches added by the fill cap.
