Filling & Dispensing Options
Larger fuel tanks are typically filled by a local fuel distributor’s truck with a fuel hose. Typical truck and trailer capacity is 7,500 to 10,000 gallons of fuel. Keep in mind, a fuel storage tank can only be filled to a maximum of 90% of the tank capacity as required by many local codes.
Overfill / Overspill Boxes
Tanks larger than 5,000 gallons typically require that fuel is pumped into the tank either through the top of the tank or on the side of the tank. These ports are designed to prevent fuel spills.
If you have a fill box located at the top of the tank, this requires climbing up to the top of the tank in order to connect the fuel hose to fill up the tank. Depending on the tank size, you would need to add a platform with access to the top of the tank in order to access the fill point.
An alternative option is to place the fill box directly on the side of the tank. This option allows you to walk up directly to the side of the tank and connect a fuel hose to fill the tank. The addition of a canopy is another option available which includes a covering on the side of the tank that keeps you covered from outdoor elements when filling up the tank.
Depending on your application, the following options are available:
- Remote / Direct Pump packages
- Pump platforms
- Fill caps
- Ladders
- Catwalks
- Handrails
Large Tank Dispensing Options
Larger tanks have the ability to accommodate a range of transfer pump options:
- Hand operated pump available in a range of GPM’s.
- A point of sale type system that records the amount and usage of fuel.
Interior Tank Coating
In most cases, carbon structural steel is adequate for storage of most liquids without requiring internal tank coating.
Certain applications, such as aviation fuel do require an additional coating on the interior of the steel tanks. For example, the Federal Aviation Administration requires epoxy coating of interior tanks for aviation fuel.
If you plan on storing water or other liquids, it is recommended that you coat the tank interior of a carbon steel tank to prevent corrosion.
