Best Auxiliary Fuel Tanks for Ford Pickup Trucks

Transfer Flow Auxiliary Fuel Tank

If you drive a Ford F150, F250, F350, or F450 pickup truck with a diesel engine and would like to expand your fuel capacity, this guide will help you pick the right sized auxiliary fuel tank for your truck bed.

Auxiliary fuel tanks offer extra fuel capacity to keep you on the road longer.  They fit securely in the back of your truck bed and will directly transfer diesel fuel into your factory fuel tank.

Auxiliary fuel tanks can provide anywhere from 30 gallons to 100 gallons of extra fuel capacity for your truck.  The main challenge is finding the right sized auxiliary fuel tank that will offer maximum additional fuel capacity while still fitting inside your truck bed.

This guide is organized into a few main sections:

  • Auxiliary tanks for F250, F350, and F450 trucks.
  • Auxiliary tanks for F150 trucks.
  • Transfer tanks for F150 gas trucks.

Ford F250 F350 and F450 Auxiliary Fuel Tanks

If you have a short bed pickup, you need to pay close attention to the distance your wheel well is from the back of your cab.

  • If the auxiliary tank width is less than the distance to your wheel well, you can fit an auxiliary tank with a length up to your bed rail width (60 to 65 inches).
  • If the auxiliary tank width is greater than the beginning of your wheel well, then your auxiliary tank length is limited to the width between your wheel wells (50.5 inches).

*Always measure your bed space dimensions to double check the correct fit.

Key Measurements:

  • Approximate bed width: 60 to 66 inches.
  • Approximate wheel well width: 50.5 inches.
  • Distance from wheel well to back of cab: 15 to 19 inches (varies by truck; important to double check this measurement on your truck).

How to Measure your Truck Bed for an Auxiliary Fuel Tank

It might seem strange at first, but your truck bed measurements for an auxiliary fuel tank are opposite of how you would measure your truck bed.

  • The length of your auxiliary fuel tank equals the truck bed width.
  • The width of your auxiliary fuel tank equals the truck bed length.
  • The height of your auxiliary fuel tank equals the truck bed depth.

Ford Short Bed vs Ford Long Bed

  • Short bed Ford pickups range from 5 foot 5 inch (65 inches) to a 6.75 foot (81 inches) bed length.
  • Long bed Ford pickups have an 8 foot (96 inches) length.

How to Measure Tank Space Around Ford Pickup Truck Wheel Wells

Ford truck wheel well width will reduce the maximum length of an auxiliary fuel tank.  If your auxiliary fuel tank has a width that is less than the point where the tank first hits the wheel well, you can fit an auxiliary tank with a length that is greater than the width between the wheel wells.

A longer pickup bed length will give you more space in your pickup bed to fit an auxiliary fuel tank before the tank width runs into the wheel well base.

We have a few additional suggestions:

  • Make sure to measure the space from the back of your pickup bed (behind the cab) to the point when you first hit the wheel well. This measurement in inches will tell you how much width your auxiliary tank can have before it hits the wheel well.
  • If you have a short bed pickup truck, look for narrow auxiliary fuel tanks or narrow transfer tanks which have lower widths.
  • You can also look for auxiliary fuel tanks with notches. The notches reduce the bottom length of a tank and are designed to fit between the wheel wells.
